Review of HR Practices (Disparity with the developed nations)

Summary of the Disparity Between HR Practices in Nigeria and Developed Nations

Human Resource (HR) practices in Nigeria have improved significantly over the years, but notable gaps still exist when compared with developed nations such as United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

In many developed countries, HR functions are highly strategic, data-driven, and supported by advanced technology. Organizations place strong emphasis on employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, continuous learning, performance management, workplace wellness, and compliance with labor regulations. HR departments are often key contributors to business strategy and organizational growth.

In contrast, many Nigerian organizations still operate with more traditional and administrative HR approaches, focusing primarily on recruitment, payroll, attendance management, and disciplinary processes. Challenges such as limited HR technology adoption, inconsistent enforcement of labor laws, inadequate employee development programs, weaker performance management systems, and budget constraints can hinder the effectiveness of HR practices.

Additionally, developed nations generally offer stronger employee welfare systems, clearer career progression paths, and more robust workplace policies. While leading Nigerian organizations are increasingly adopting global HR best practices, many businesses—especially small and medium-sized enterprises—continue to face challenges in aligning with international HR standards.

Overall, the disparity lies mainly in the level of strategic HR integration, technological advancement, employee-centric policies, and regulatory compliance, although Nigeria continues to make progress in closing these gaps.
